The Kiosk-platform for contemporary art and the Telenor Foundation, in collaboration with the Duga company and local authorities, have launched the Start Up City project, within which 19 towns in Serbia, which have recently gained the status of cities, will be beautified with murals by young artists. The project promotes the new cities and aims to contribute to the urban development of Serbia and improve the general perception and image of our country.
This initiative is also expected to revive the art scene throughout Serbia and contribute to the decentralization of cultural production. Artistic practice is affirmed through the collaboration of the artists and local community, public spaces are improved and the lives of the people in smaller communities are elevated.
So far eight murals have been painted in eight cities, and by the end of 2008 the remaining eleven are set to be completed, improving all the municipalities with the new city status with an exceptional work of art set in a public space.
The collaboration between the Telenor Foundation and Kiosk in the Start Up City project has received the Bizart Award, which is sponsored by the Serbian Ministry of Culture, for the best partnership between the cultural and commerce sectors.
